Siemens scandal: Nigerians call for probe

SOME eminent persons allegedly indicted by German court over a bribery scandal involving communications firm, Siemens AG on Saturday made spirited efforts to clear their names.

But there were calls on President Umaru Yar’Adua to probe the allegation because of its consequence on the image of the country.

Three former Ministers of Communications: Chief Cornelius Adebayo, Maj-Gen. Tajudeen Olanrewaju and Dr. Mohammed Bello, along with Senator Jibril Aminu, stoutly denied that they received bribes from the company or any of its agents.

Each of them was angry over the report of the scandal, which triggered calls on Saturday for public probe of past administrations in the country.

When he was contacted on the phone by Sunday Punch on Saturday, Adebayo said, “I do not know anything about it. Thank you,” he quipped.

The former governor of Kwara State in the Second Republic was a minister between 2002 and 2006 under the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Olanrewaju also dismissed the allegations against him. He said, “I was a Minister of Communication between 1994 and 1997 and the report said I took the bribe on August 8, 2002. I was out of office five years earlier and was not in government, neither was I in a position to award or influence the award of contracts in that ministry.
