The Association of National Housing Programme Depositors (ANHPD) has appealed to President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua to come to their aid over the perpetual ordeal they are being subjected to as depositors under the Federal Govern-ment National Housing Programme (NHP).

According to the chairman of the association, Elder Samuel Oyedeyi, the Federal Housing Authority (FHA) had served as the executing agency since 1994 after it had taken millions of naira deposits from them under contract, but reneged on its obligation to provide housing for them.
He said that in early 1994, the Federal Government had invited low income earners in the country, through advertorials in the Nigerian dailies, to apply for housing units to be constructed under contract in the manner of ‘offer’ and ‘acceptance’ with stipulated terms of conditions.

According to him, they were asked to obtain an application form with N100 and to return same not later than June 30 with 20 percent of the total cost of the house type chosen as down-payment. He said that the mode of payment was by certified bank draft, which they paid to FHA as the programme’s executing agency.

Oyedeyi said that in Lagos State alone, there were 22,636 subscribers and they made payment to the value of N850 million.
According to him, housing units which they deposited for were supposed to have been constructed within 1994/95 and delivered to them on first come first serve basis while the balance of 80 percent was to be paid instalmentally through mortgage institutions, over a period of 25 years. full story
