Yar’Adua will step down if… - New African

President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua took office in May this year under the shadow of a disputed election, but after six months in office, the former university don has shown that he is quietly asserting his own authority. But there is a threat hanging over his head. Joseph King reports from Abuja.

Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, the soft-spoken former state governor, was chosen by former President Olusegun Obasanjo to run for the top job, but mindful of the damage the disputed election has done to his credibility and the government he heads, President Yar’Adua has said he would be prepared to step down if the election tribunal (before which is a myriad of cases challenging his victory) rules against him. And what a promise this could turn out to be. Responding to an enquiry in New York recently by a top US government official on the presidential election tribunal in Nigeria, Yar’Adua said he would accept the tribunal’s judgement in good faith, even if it went against him.
